September full moon
The Corn Moon
2026: Saturday, September 26 · Moon in Aries ♈︎
Where the name comes from
The name Corn Moon comes to us through the American almanac tradition, most famously the Old Farmer's Almanac, which borrowed and popularized full moon names used by Native American peoples, particularly Algonquian speaking communities of the Northeast, alongside colonial and European folk names. For these communities, September's full moon rose over fields ready for gathering: this was the time to bring in the corn, the staple that would carry families through winter. It is worth knowing that naming traditions varied widely between nations and regions, so Corn Moon is one thread among many. In years when the Harvest Moon (the full moon nearest the autumn equinox) falls in October, September's moon keeps the Corn Moon name.
The energy of this moon
The Corn Moon carries the feeling of a season turning. Summer's expansive energy is winding down, and what you planted months ago, in your garden or in your life, is now ready to be gathered. This is a moon of harvest, gratitude and honest stock taking: noticing what grew well, what withered, and what you want to store up for the quieter months ahead. There is also a thread of preparation here, a gentle nudge to get your inner house in order before the year darkens. Think abundance, completion and the quiet satisfaction of work coming to fruit.
A simple Corn Moon ritual
- Gather your harvest. Sit somewhere you can see the moon, or simply somewhere quiet, and write a list of everything that has come to fruition since spring: projects finished, habits built, relationships deepened, lessons learned. Say thank you for each one, out loud if it feels right.
- Release the failed crop. Look back over the year and name one thing that did not grow: a plan, an expectation, a version of events you were holding onto. Write it on a slip of paper, then tear it up or run it under water as a way of letting the field rest.
- Store something for winter. Choose one insight, intention or source of strength from your list and write it on a card or in your journal as your provision for the darker months. Keep it somewhere you will see it, and let it be the thing you return to when energy runs low.
Journal prompts
- What have I harvested this year, and which of these fruits came from seeds I planted deliberately?
- What did I hope would grow that didn't, and what is that failed crop trying to teach me?
- As the light begins to fade toward winter, what do I most need to store up: rest, connection, courage, or something else entirely?
