The Devil
Upright meaning
The Devil is the card of bondage, but the chains are looser than they look. Upright, it points to attachments that hold you back: unhealthy habits, addiction, obsession, toxic ties, or the pull of money, status and desire. You may feel trapped, yet you often hold the key to your own release. This card asks you to see clearly what has real power over you and to name it honestly.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, The Devil signals breaking free: releasing a bad habit, leaving a toxic bond, or reclaiming power you had given away. It can also warn of denial, where you keep clinging to something you know is harmful.
In love, it points to intense attraction or codependency, so ask whether the bond feels freeing or controlling.
In work and money, it warns of a job that traps you, overspending, or ambition that has become an unhealthy chain.
