The Beaver Moon

2026: Tuesday, November 24 · Moon in Gemini ♊︎

Where the name comes from

The name Beaver Moon comes to us through the Old Farmer's Almanac, which drew on names used by Algonquian-speaking peoples and later colonial settlers to mark the rhythm of the year. November was the month when beavers, busy fortifying their lodges and stocking food before the freeze, were most visible, and when trappers set their lines before the waters iced over. Seasonally, this moon marked a turning point: the last stretch of preparation before winter closed in, when communities gathered what they needed and settled toward the hearth. It is worth remembering that different nations had their own names for this moon, each rooted in their own land and language, so the Beaver Moon is one thread in a much wider tradition.

The energy of this moon

The Beaver Moon carries the energy of preparation, protection and wise instinct. Like the beaver working steadily on its lodge, this is a moon for shoring up your foundations: your home, your finances, your boundaries, your inner reserves. It asks you what truly sustains you through a hard season and what can be released before the cold sets in. There is a quiet, industrious warmth to it, less about outward achievement and more about building a life that can hold you. Themes of security, self-reliance, gathering in and turning toward the inner world all run strong under this November light.

A simple Beaver Moon ritual

  1. Prepare your space. Tidy one small corner of your home, light a candle if you have one, and take three slow breaths. As you settle, name out loud one thing that made you feel safe or supported this year.
  2. Build your lodge. On a piece of paper, write down the three things you most want to protect and nurture through the winter months, whether that is your health, a relationship, a project or your peace of mind. Under each one, add a single small action you can take this week to strengthen it.
  3. Release before the freeze. On a second piece of paper, write one worry, habit or obligation you are ready to set down. Tear it up slowly, thank it for whatever it once taught you, and place your list of three protected things somewhere you will see it each morning.

Journal prompts

  • What am I building right now, and does it truly shelter the life I want to live this winter?
  • Where in my life do I need stronger boundaries, and what would it look like to reinforce them with the beaver's calm persistence rather than urgency?
  • What have I gathered this year, in lessons, relationships or inner strength, that I want to carry with me into the darker months?
