The Cold Moon

2026: Thursday, December 24 · Moon in Cancer ♋︎

Where the name comes from

The name Cold Moon comes to us through the Old Farmer's Almanac, which drew on full moon names used by Native American peoples, alongside colonial and European traditions. It is often traced to the Mohawk name for this moon, a plain acknowledgment that December brings the deep, settled cold of true winter. Other recorded names include the Long Night Moon, fitting for a full moon that rides high through the longest nights of the year near the winter solstice, and the old European Moon Before Yule. Names varied widely from nation to nation and region to region, so the Cold Moon is best understood as one thread in a much larger tradition of marking time by the sky and the season. For the communities who named it, December meant staying close to the fire, living on what had been stored, and waiting out the dark together.

The energy of this moon

The Cold Moon carries the energy of stillness, completion and rest. It rises at the close of the year, when the nights are longest, and it asks you to slow down rather than push forward. This is a moon for taking stock: honoring what the year gave you, grieving what it took, and letting go of what you no longer need to carry into January. There is a quiet warmth inside its cold, the kind you find in candlelight, thick blankets and honest reflection. Themes to sit with under this moon: endings, gratitude, inner quiet, and trusting that rest is not wasted time but the ground new things grow from.

A simple Cold Moon ritual

  1. Make yourself a warm drink, turn the lights low, and sit by a window where you can see the night sky, or step outside for a moment if the moon is visible. Take ten slow breaths and simply arrive in the quiet.
  2. On a scrap of paper, write down everything from this year you are ready to set down: a worry, a grudge, a habit, a version of yourself you have outgrown. Read it once, thank it for what it taught you, then tear the paper into small pieces and throw them away.
  3. On a fresh piece of paper, write one sentence of gratitude for the year that is ending and one sentence naming what you want to carry into the new one. Place it somewhere you will see it in the morning, then sit in stillness for a minute before you go to bed.

Journal prompts

  • Looking back over this year, what am I most proud of that nobody else saw or celebrated?
  • What am I still holding onto that belongs to a season of my life that has already ended, and what would it feel like to set it down?
  • If this long, dark night is a resting place, what part of me most needs rest right now, and how can I give it that in the weeks ahead?
