The Wolf Moon

2026: Saturday, January 3 · Moon in Cancer ♋︎

Where the name comes from

The name Wolf Moon comes down to us through the Old Farmer's Almanac, which drew on full moon names used by Native American peoples, including Algonquin-speaking communities, alongside colonial and European folk traditions. It is worth holding this lightly: different nations had their own names for this moon, and Wolf Moon is one thread among many. The name is tied to the sound of wolves howling through the long January nights. People once assumed the howling meant hunger in the lean season, though we now know wolves call to locate their pack and mark territory. Seasonally, January was the deep heart of winter: food stores running low, cold at its sharpest, and survival depending on staying close to the fire and to each other.

The energy of this moon

The Wolf Moon carries the energy of endurance and belonging. It rises in the quietest, coldest stretch of the year, when nothing in nature is rushing, and it asks you to do the same: conserve your strength, trust the slow work happening beneath the surface, and notice who your pack really is. There is also something in it about voice. The wolf howls not out of desperation but to say, I am here, where are you? This moon invites you to speak your own truth into the dark, to name what you need, and to honour both your solitude and your loyalty to the people who keep you warm.

A simple Wolf Moon ritual

  1. Find the moon. Step outside or stand at a window where you can see the night sky, even if clouds hide the moon itself. Take five slow breaths and let the cold, quiet stillness of January settle around you.
  2. Name your pack. On any scrap of paper, write down the people, places and habits that got you through the past year, then read the list back slowly and let yourself feel genuinely held by it.
  3. Give one howl. Speak a single intention for the season ahead out loud, in your own words, then fold the paper away somewhere safe and close the ritual with something warming: a hot drink, a blanket, an early night.

Journal prompts

  • Where in my life am I howling to be heard, and who do I trust to answer back?
  • What has helped me survive the lean seasons before, and how can I lean on it now instead of pushing harder?
  • What is quietly growing in me beneath the surface this winter, and what does it need from me before spring?
