February full moon
The Snow Moon
2026: Sunday, February 1 · Moon in Leo ♌︎
Where the name comes from
The name Snow Moon comes from the tradition of naming each full moon after what was happening on the land, names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac and drawn in part from Native American usage, though different nations had their own names and calendars. February earned this one honestly: across much of North America it is typically the snowiest month, when drifts pile deepest and the cold settles in for its last long stretch. Some communities also knew it as the Hunger Moon, because stored food ran low and hunting was hard, a reminder that this was the leanest point of the year, with spring still out of reach but coming.
The energy of this moon
The Snow Moon carries the energy of stillness, endurance and quiet trust. It sits at the point in the year when nothing looks like it is growing, yet everything is gathering strength beneath the surface. This is a moon for slowing down rather than pushing, for tending your reserves, and for noticing what has been keeping you warm through a hard season: the people, habits and small comforts that carry you. It asks you to make peace with the waiting, to rest without guilt, and to hold faith that the thaw is already on its way even when you cannot see it yet.
A simple Snow Moon ritual
- Create a pocket of stillness. Turn off your screens for twenty minutes, dim the lights, and sit somewhere you can see the night sky or simply picture the moon over snow. Let your breathing slow to match the quiet of the season.
- Name what is sustaining you. On a scrap of paper, write down three things that have carried you through the winter so far, then read them aloud as a simple thank you.
- Plant one seed of intention. Write a single sentence describing something you want to be ready for when spring arrives, fold the paper, and tuck it somewhere safe. Leave it resting there, just as the earth rests now, and return to it on the spring equinox.
Journal prompts
- What in my life looks dormant right now but is actually quietly gathering strength beneath the surface?
- Where am I running lean this season, and what would it look like to tend my reserves instead of pushing through?
- When the thaw comes, what do I want to be ready to grow, and what one small thing can I do now to prepare the ground?
