March full moon
The Worm Moon
2026: Tuesday, March 3 · Moon in Virgo ♍︎
Where the name comes from
The name Worm Moon comes down to us through the Old Farmer's Almanac, which in the 1930s began publishing full moon names drawn from Native American, colonial American and European traditions. Many of the March names are linked to Algonquin-speaking peoples of the northeastern United States, though each nation had its own names and the almanac versions are a simplified record of a much richer tradition. The most common explanation is the earthworms that surface as the ground thaws, drawing robins and other returning birds. An older account from the 1760s suggests it may have referred to beetle larvae emerging from thawing tree bark. Either way, the meaning is the same: March was the month the frozen world softened and life stirred again. Other traditional names for this moon include the Sap Moon, Sugar Moon and Crow Moon, all pointing to the same seasonal turning.
The energy of this moon
The Worm Moon carries the energy of quiet awakening. It arrives near the spring equinox, right at the hinge between winter and spring, so its themes are emergence, renewal and readiness. Whatever you have been incubating through the dark months is beginning to stir, and this moon asks you to notice it. It is not the energy of full bloom. It is the energy of the thaw: softening what has been frozen, loosening old ground, and trusting that unseen work below the surface is about to show itself. It is a good moon for releasing winter heaviness and choosing what you want to grow next.
A simple Worm Moon ritual
- Ground yourself in the season. Step outside or open a window under the full moon, take five slow breaths, and notice one real sign that the season is turning, like softer air, birdsong or longer light.
- Release the frost. On a scrap of paper, write one habit, worry or old story that kept you small through the winter. Tear it up and throw it away, saying out loud that you are letting the thaw take it.
- Plant your intention. Write one thing you are ready to let emerge this spring in a single clear sentence, then place the paper somewhere you will see it daily, perhaps beside a plant or on a windowsill in the moonlight.
Journal prompts
- What has been quietly growing beneath the surface of my life this winter, and what would it look like to let it emerge?
- What frozen ground am I still standing on: a habit, belief or fear that is ready to soften and be released?
- If this spring could bring me one honest renewal, what would I want it to be, and what small step could I take toward it this week?
