The Pink Moon

Where the name comes from

The Pink Moon takes its name from the moon-name lists popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which drew on names used by some Native American peoples, particularly Algonquian-speaking communities of the northeastern United States, alongside colonial and European folk traditions. The pink is not the moon itself but the land beneath it: creeping phlox, also called moss pink, is one of the first wildflowers to carpet the ground in early spring. April marked the true turn of the season, when the thaw held, birds returned, and the earth was finally soft enough to plant.

The energy of this moon

This is a moon of emergence and renewal. Whatever you kept quiet through the winter, a hope, a plan, a version of yourself, now wants light and air. The Pink Moon carries themes of fresh starts, gentle growth, fertility in the widest sense, and the courage to be seen in an early, unfinished state. Like the first blooms it is named for, its energy is tender rather than loud: it asks you to begin, not to be perfect.

A simple Pink Moon ritual

1. Step outside or sit by a window where you can see the moon, or simply sense it behind cloud. Take a few slow breaths and let your shoulders drop, arriving fully in the moment.
2. On a scrap of paper, write one intention you want to grow this season, something that has been waiting in you through the colder months. Read it aloud once, softly, as if you were telling the moon.
3. Fold the paper and place it somewhere you will see it daily, like a mirror or bedside table. Close by naming one thing you are grateful for right now, then head to bed and let the intention rest overnight, the way a seed rests in spring soil.
