May full moon
The Flower Moon
2026: Friday, May 1 · Moon in Scorpio ♏︎
Where the name comes from
The name Flower Moon comes to us through the Old Farmer's Almanac, which drew on names used by Algonquin peoples and other Native American nations, later blended with colonial and European folk traditions. Different nations kept their own names for this moon, including references to planting, budding, and the return of frogs and blossoms, so Flower Moon is one thread in a much wider tradition rather than a single universal title. Seasonally, May marked the moment the land finally answered spring's promise: fields ready for planting, wildflowers opening across meadows, and the growing season truly underway.
The energy of this moon
The Flower Moon carries the energy of full, unapologetic blooming. This is the moon of things coming into the open: talents you have been quietly tending, feelings you have kept folded away, plans that have been waiting in the dark of winter. Its themes are fertility, beauty, self-expression, and abundance, with a gentle push toward visibility. If the earlier spring moons asked you to plant and trust, the Flower Moon asks you to let yourself be seen. There can be tenderness in that too, because blooming is exposure, so this moon also invites softness with yourself as you open up.
A simple Flower Moon ritual
- Gather one small piece of nature, a flower from a walk, a leaf, even a sprig of herbs from the kitchen, and set it somewhere you can see it. Let it stand for something in you that is ready to bloom.
- Sit with it for a few quiet minutes under the moon or by a window and name, out loud or in your head, one thing you have been growing in private that you are now willing to let show. Say it simply: I am ready for this to be seen.
- Close by writing that one thing on a slip of paper and placing it somewhere visible for the next month, a mirror, a desk, a journal cover. Each time you see it, take one small action, however tiny, that moves it further into the open.
Journal prompts
- What in my life is quietly blooming right now, and how would it feel to let other people actually see it?
- Where am I still hiding out of habit rather than need, and what small act of visibility feels possible this month?
- What did I plant, in myself or my life, earlier this year that deserves to be celebrated tonight, even if it is not finished yet?
