The Buck Moon

2026: Wednesday, July 29 · Moon in Aquarius ♒︎

Where the name comes from

The name Buck Moon comes to us through the Old Farmer's Almanac, which drew many of its moon names from those used by Algonquin-speaking peoples of the northeastern United States, blended with names from colonial American tradition. July is the month when male deer are growing their new antlers at full speed, soft, velvet-covered and visibly larger by the week, which is why this moon carries their name. It is worth remembering that naming traditions varied widely between Indigenous nations: some called this the Thunder Moon for July's storms, others the Berry Moon or Raspberry Moon for what the land was offering. For farming communities it was also the Hay Moon, marking the first cutting of the fields. Every version points to the same truth: July is the season of visible, vigorous growth.

The energy of this moon

The Buck Moon carries the energy of growth you can finally see. Like antlers pushing through velvet, this is the full moon of strength gathering, of becoming who you have been quietly working to be. Its themes are courage, maturation and standing tall: claiming your progress instead of downplaying it. There is also a shedding quality here. A buck eventually rubs away the velvet that protected the new growth, and this moon asks the same of you: what soft protection served you once but now needs to come off so you can stand in your full strength? It is a moon for owning your power without apology.

A simple Buck Moon ritual

  1. Step outside under the moonlight, or sit by a window where you can see the night sky, and take three slow breaths. Then say out loud one way you have grown since the year began, even if it feels small.
  2. On a scrap of paper, write down one thing you have outgrown: a habit, a worry, or an old version of yourself. Tear the paper into pieces and throw it away, thanking it for the protection it once gave you.
  3. Place a hand over your heart and set one intention for growth you want to be visible by the next full moon. Speak it in the present tense, as if it is already true, then pour yourself a glass of water and drink it slowly to seal the intention.

Journal prompts

  • Where in my life am I growing faster than I have given myself credit for, and what would it feel like to actually claim that progress?
  • What protective layer, like the velvet on new antlers, once kept me safe but is now ready to be shed?
  • If I stood at my full height, without shrinking or apologizing, what would I do differently in the month ahead?
